FAQ's
Listed below are useful FAQs and some commonly asked questions about CrossFit…
1What is Crossfit?
CrossFit is a style of training which incorporates constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. It caters to everybody, from the person who just wants to improve their health and wellness to the professional athlete. One of the best things about CrossFit is the community that develops within a CrossFit facility – it makes training fun, enjoyable and a natural part of your life. It has been said that if you put people and effort in the same room, you get community! Remember that nothing worthwhile in life comes easily – so there is some effort involved! 2Is CrossFit a good way to lose weight and burn fat quickly?
As a facility we promote CrossFit as a lifestyle and something that becomes a part of your life and daily routine. We focus on improving people’s performance and general well-being through adopting CrossFit training and promoting certain lifestyle and nutrition principles. The natural result if you train to enhance performance and improve your lifestyle choices will be weight/body fat loss, if you were previously overweight, or weight gain, if you were previously underweight. No matter what you have been told before, there is no quick fix for fitness and health – it requires consistent effort and correct decision making over the course of your life. The good news is if you put in the effort and make the right choices, you will get sustainable results. Depending on your current lifestyle, these results may be seen and felt within a short period of time; the hard work comes in maintaining those results. We are here to help make that effort more enjoyable and guide you through making the correct decisions, which will lead to lasting change.
3I am a lady and have seen pictures/videos of people doing CrossFit online or on TV and everyone looks super fit. I just want to be healthy and am worried about picking up too much muscle. Will CrossFit make me develop a bulky muscular body?
The top level CrossFit athletes that you may have seen online or on TV are all amazing athletes! What’s important to remember is that these athletes represent the top 0.5% of people who have decided to make CrossFit their “sport” of choice. The same reasoning would mean that if you start running you are eventually going to be terribly thin like Olympic marathon runners or if you take up rugby you are going to look like Sonny Bill Williams! These results are not likely UNLESS you specifically eat and train to develop a muscular build or you have a genetic pre-disposition for developing muscle mass very quickly. CrossFit helps you develop strength but strength does not necessarily involve developing multiple layers of muscle. Instead, CrossFit will aid you in developing muscle which is key to long-term health and a lean, toned physique. Contrary to popular belief, a toned physique is not obtained by doing hours and hours of “cardio”. Lifting loads using the correct technique is an important part of what is required for the development of a healthy, lean body.
4I currently participate in another sport. Will CrossFit help me improve my sport-specific performance?
CrossFit specialises in developing a range of different skills – including endurance, stamina, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy – and we develop these by utilising a range of different training methodologies. The benefit of this approach is that it helps you develop into a well-rounded athlete. Most sports require a degree of specialisation but without a solid base of fitness and health, your ability to efficiently and effectively utilise your sport-specific skill is compromised. CrossFit is an exceptional tool that can be used to prepare you to be the best that you can be in any sport that you may choose. At Reebok CrossFit Blackriver we actively encourage our members to apply their fitness to a chosen sport and to try out new sports.
We also offer personalised programming for athletes from any sporting background. We can tailor strength and conditioning programmes to your specific needs. This would, however, require personal training sessions – please contact us here to enquire about the options available.
